There may be a beer shortage affecting the whole of Europe
Due to the energy crisis and climate change, Europe’s largest malt exporter is facing serious problems, which are further deepened by the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Nagy sörhiány várható
“The increasingly protracted Russian-Ukrainian conflict presented a huge challenge to large beer producers, as energy costs rose significantly. Production primarily requires a lot of gas, but the price of natural gas has doubled in the course of a year, and has now tripled.”
Olivier Hautin, CEO of Malteurop, one of the world’s largest malt factories, told Euractiv that there could soon be a serious shortage of beer on the continent, as it is facing increasing problems due to the sanctions crisis and the energy crisis.
French-owned Malteurope produces 160,000 tons annually, and has been present in Ukraine since 2001.
The CEO also told the newspaper that the lack of carbon dioxide, which is essential for beer production, is also a huge problem.
In Germany, the life of beer producers has been a struggle for a long time, as there is an unprecedented lack of carbon dioxide, so smaller companies have already been forced to close.
