So far, they have asked for a hefty price, but now eggs will be even more expensive
In Hungary, the packing point price of table eggs (M+L) from cage farming was HUF 37.25 per piece in the first thirty-one weeks of 2022, which was 34.9 percent higher than the average price for the same period of 2021. At the same time, the packing point price of deep-laid table eggs (M+L) was HUF 41.02/piece, which is 39.3 percent higher than the average price a year ago.
According to the forecast published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in July, egg production in the USA may decrease by 3.9 percent in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year, and an annual decrease of 2.8 percent is expected, according to the latest report of the AKI. Per capita egg consumption is expected to be 1.6 percent lower in the third quarter of 2022 and 1.1 percent lower in the whole year than a year earlier.
Based on data from the European Commission, EU (EU27) egg and egg product imports decreased by 21.9 percent to 8,000 tons in January-May 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year. 57 percent of imports came from Ukraine (+6.6 percent) and 12 percent from the USA (+63 percent). While Ukrainian imports were only 334 tons in January-March, 1,265 tons of eggs and egg products arrived in April and 2,976 tons in May, reports the Agrárszektor.
