Retail sales of energy drinks doubling
Retail sales of energy drinks more than doubled in the May 2008-April 2009 period, compared to the preceding 12 months, with total sales exceeding HUF 10 billion. Sales were up by 114 percent in terms of quantity and by 96 percent in terms of value. Average price dropped substantially. The growth produced by private labels was not entirely due to sales generated by discounts, as practically all hyper market chains also sell PL-s of their own. Private labels accounted for 66 percent of retail sales in April. Tutti-frutti is still the most popular flavour, while larger units sizes are also becoming more popular. The market share of hyper markets has dropped from 38 percent last year, to 34 percent. Sports drinks also produced dynamic growth (69 percent) in the same period, with total sales exceeding HUF 300 million.
