Active tourism along the Danube: there are developments, but service providers’ language skills and complex packages are still lacking
According to what was said at the recent conference on the development of active tourism along the Danube, several measures and investments have supported the sector in recent times: active tourism has received a separate organizational framework, an “active pocket” is linked to the Széchenyi Card, tourist lodges have been renovated, and subsidies have also been received for guesthouses – at the same time, there are still many untapped opportunities along the Danube.
Róbert Richárd Kiss, Dean of Kodolányi János University, highlighted to InfoRádió that today there are many Danube ports that can be used continuously, “0-24”, and the water infrastructure has also been strengthened: kayaking and canoeing bases, boat docks and locations suitable for trying out various watercraft are available. At the same time, the active tourism offer on the Danube is currently more strongly oriented towards the domestic market, and in order to be easily “sold” to foreign guests, it would also be necessary to develop the language skills of service providers.
According to the expert, active tourism no longer means just cheap water tours, but complex experience packages that combine active programs with gastronomic and cultural elements, in a guided format, at a higher level of service. In his opinion, the direction is good, but more development and conscious product building are needed to “put active tourism on the map” along the Danube.
