REWE is piloting its new Drive&Go pickup service in Germany, allowing customers to collect online grocery orders directly from their cars, similar to a drive-through.

This service aims to save time and offer convenience, with orders ready in approximately three minutes. Customers can order through the REWE online shop or app, select a Drive&Go time slot, and then drive to a designated covered drive-in lane at the store, ESM Magazine reports.

After scanning a QR code, the store team brings the order directly to the vehicle.

Payment is cashless, from the car.

This differs from existing pickup services by eliminating the need to enter the store entirely.

Food prices are consistent with in-store pricing, and 4,000 products are permanently discounted.

These include well-known brands, REWE organic ranges, fruit and vegetables, and the Ja!  budget line.

The service is free for orders over €70, with a €2 fee for smaller orders.

Pilot Programme

The pilot programme, lasting 12 months, has been launched in the western German cities of Euskirchen and Hachenburg, with Alfter to follow.

These varied markets will help REWE gather insights to refine its e-commerce offerings.

During the pilot phase, factors such as customer acceptance, satisfaction, processes, and technical components will be evaluated.

Lars Klein, chairman of the management board of REWE Region West, explained, “We listen very carefully to what our customers want in their everyday lives.

“Time is a decisive factor.

“The Drive&Go pickup service is our answer to this: a real pit-stop moment while shopping – fast, convenient, and perfectly integrated into the daily routine.”

Clemens Bauer, director of REWE e-commerce, added, “We see Drive&Go as another strategic online channel in our diverse food sector, which already has very successful offers for customers with its delivery and pickup services.

“Our goal is to develop innovations that not only work technically, but also offer our customers real added value in their everyday lives and can be scaled across the board in the future.”

Seventh Pick&Go Store

Separately, REWE has rolled out its seventh Pick&Go test store in Hanover.

This ‘scanless’ technology allows customers to shop without manually scanning items at the checkout.

To use Pick&Go, customers simply place items in their baskets or bags and then proceed to one of eight payment terminals.

Here, their purchased items are automatically displayed for review before they complete their payment via cash or card.
