Price hike on the train to the Adriatic: this is how much dinner on the way to Split costs
In the summer of 2025, we can once again travel by night train to the Croatian coast: from June 19 to September 13, the MÁV Adria InterCity service will operate between Budapest and Split. The service is not only attractive due to its scenic route, but also due to the Utasellató dining car – although the prices have also become more expensive.
The dining car’s offering has been further expanded in 2025: the selection ranges from classic hamburgers to gyros and Balkan moussaka. At the same time, prices have also increased: while the START Burger costs 2,600 forints on the Balaton IC, it is now 3,400 forints towards Split. The hamburger menu (burger, side dish, soft drink or beer) costs 4,800 forints – this is 1,100 forints more than on the Balaton route.
The new favorite, the gyros bowl, costs 4,200 forints this year (last year it was only 3,705 forints), the deep-fried pork ribs or the falafel bowl are also around this price. Among the hot dishes, the pork roast with lecsó is 5,200, the beef stew with dumplings is 6,000 forints – these already represent restaurant price levels. The classic breakfasts – egg dishes, cold dishes, croissants – range between 2,200–3,000 forints, the muesli is 1,400 forints, the breakfast drink package is 1,600.
Among the desserts, the pancakes are 1,600 forints (the same is 800 at the Balaton IC), the Somlói galuska, brownie or passion fruit cake are all 2,000 forints. The legendary chocoholic has also become more expensive: it costs 1,000 forints at the Adria IC – compared to 650 forints at the Balaton.
Drinks aren’t cheap either: an espresso costs 1,000 forints, a cappuccino costs 1,400, and soft drinks cost between 600 and 1,000 forints. A pint of Soproni costs 1,200, an Edelweiss costs 1,400 forints, and soft drinks cost between 2,600 and 3,000 forints.
Although the prices are higher, the selection has also become richer. The Adria IC dining car is therefore not only practical, but also a culinary experience – if your wallet can handle it. It’s worth planning ahead, because getting to Split in a sitting car can cost from as little as 47 euros, but dinner on board can easily double the cost.
