White cabbage has become more expensive

According to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), Hungary produced 7 percent less white cabbage (32.7 thousand tons) in 2024 than a year earlier.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), Hungary’s foreign trade balance for white and red cabbage was negative in 2024, when the quantity supplied reached 7.71 thousand tons, while 2.70 thousand tons were exported to foreign markets. In the first seven months of this year, imports did not change compared to the same period last year, remaining at 3.98 thousand tons. Imports from Germany increased by 2 percent to 2.14 thousand tons, and from the Netherlands by 9 percent to 962.6 tons, while significantly less white cabbage arrived from Poland, 182.9 tons (compare: first seven months of 2024: 672.7 tons). Exports increased by 1 percent, amounting to 2.22 thousand tons, a significant portion of which was directed to Scandinavian countries (Finland, Sweden), as well as Romania, the Czech Republic and Austria.

According to AKI PÁIR data, prime white cabbage entered the market at the Budapest Wholesale Market in the 14th week at a price of 750 HUF/kilogram

The price of prime white cabbage increased by 24 percent to 457 HUF/kilogram in the 14th–27th week compared to a year earlier. After the prime ended, the price of free-range white cabbage increased by 6 percent to 260 HUF/kilogram in the 28th–36th week compared to the same period of the previous year. Prime red cabbage appeared on the market in the 21st week, its market entry price was 530 HUF/kilogram. The price of prime red cabbage increased by 13 percent to 490 forints/kilogram in weeks 21–27 compared to a year earlier. After the prime ended, the price of free-range red cabbage did not change, at 337 forints/kilogram in weeks 28–36 compared to the same period last year.
