By the end of December, there may be a national shortage of potatoes
Although the price cap on potatoes is good news for the public, according to producers, this could lead to another crisis situation. Because of the drought, the harvest was already scarce, and the storage costs increase week by week, month by month – but only until the end of December – after that, the potatoes run out.
“For us, this is the worst-case scenario, that the price cap affects potatoes of all sizes and types, with the exception of new and sweet potatoes. The basic problem is that Hungary produced approximately 11 percent fewer potatoes this year than the year before. In light of this year’s figures, December by the end, by the beginning of January, domestic potatoes will run out”
Éva Kulich, press representative of the National Potato Association and Product Council, told InfoRádio.
Another huge problem is that in such an economic environment, growers will not be brave enough to start the year by growing table potatoes in February, when the potato growing cycle begins, when the tubers are planted.
