Pensioner food vouchers can be redeemed until December 31st

This year, approximately 2.6 million recipients of pension-like benefits received a food voucher package worth a total of 30 thousand forints, consisting of ten different denominations. Experience has shown that most of the beneficiaries have already purchased the support, but there may still be beneficiaries for whom some of the vouchers are unused.

The vouchers can only be used to purchase cold food and cannot be spent on ready-made meals, alcohol, tobacco products and salt. The denominations cannot be exchanged for cash, either in part or in full.

Important deadlines for trade

For traders, the administrative process of redemption will be completed with a longer deadline: vouchers accepted in circulation can be redeemed at banks until February 28, 2026. In practice, this means that voucher turnover that still appears in the end-of-year period may still affect financial settlements in early 2026.

According to experience, the expiration of vouchers stimulates the turnover of basic foodstuffs in the short term, especially in discount and supermarkets, where the proportion of retired customers is traditionally high. For commercial players, the end-of-year days therefore require special attention not only from a logistical but also from a cash and settlement perspective.
