The clustered Agaricus (Agaricus bohusii) has been selected as Hungary’s Mushroom of the Year 2026 in a vote organised by the Hungarian Mycological Society. The voting took place in October 2025: from ten nominees, three species reached the final round – acacia blewit, the orange bell mushroom, and the eventual winner, the clustered Agaricus.

One of the species’ most striking traits is that it rarely grows alone: it typically appears in dense clusters, with 8–10 fruiting bodies sometimes emerging from the same base. Its cap is decorated with brown scales, the gills can show a pinkish hue, and the flesh reddens when touched before gradually turning brown. Descriptions note a mildly sweet aroma and a pleasant taste.

However, although it is considered edible, it is also a protected species, meaning collecting is not recommended. The key message is to observe and document it (for example by photographing it) rather than harvesting it.

The clustered Agaricus generally fruits from July to November, most often in open woodland and oak groves, typically on semi-shaded soils. According to the organisers, the Mushroom of the Year initiative is designed not only to highlight a species, but also to support nature conservation, public education, and broader awareness of the diversity of fungi.
