Bouquet or potted plant? This is how flower buying habits are changing on Women’s Day
Flowers are still the most popular Women’s Day gift, but six out of ten women are more happy with a potted, live plant than a cut flower – this is revealed in a recent study by the Folly Arboretum in Badacsonyörs. The experts at the Balaton Garden of Eden also draw attention to the fact that it is worth choosing an early flowering plant or an evergreen, which is beautiful in March, but will decorate the garden or apartment for months after the holiday.
Eight out of ten women receive a gift every year on March 8, International Women’s Day – this is revealed in a recent study conducted by the Folly Arboretum in Badacsonyörs with the help of nearly 1,000 respondents. 70 percent of those surveyed are most happy with flowers, but most of them would rather receive a potted plant than a cut flower. According to 57 percent of the participants, quality time spent together, according to 49 percent, a shared experience, and according to 36 percent, a few kind words are perfect Women’s Day gifts.
The arboretum’s research also included male respondents, of whom every second considers Women’s Day to be an important holiday, 36 percent consider it a kind gesture, and only 10 percent think that March 8 is a neutral day for them that they do not consider important. According to the research, the majority of men primarily give gifts to their girlfriends, wives, or mothers on this day. Nearly 40 percent clearly choose flowers when choosing a Women’s Day gift, but many mentioned a shared experience as a gift, and others surprise women important to them with some kind of personal gesture. When choosing flowers, three-quarters of men decide primarily based on the appearance of the flower, but every fourth respondent also considers the meaning to be important.
What should you choose at the beginning of March?
When buying flowers for Women’s Day, it is important that the selected plant is attractive even at the moment of gifting, but also develops further as the season progresses – believe the experts of the Folly Botanica webshop. Therefore, their Women’s Day selection includes varieties that are either evergreen or that bloom at the end of winter, but reach their full potential later.
One such plant is the already blooming, characteristically fragrant berry boxwood, which remains green all year round and looks good in smaller gardens or on balconies. At the beginning of the season, daisies are among the first to bloom, when the garden is just waking up. The spreading rosemary (‘Boule’) with its bright blue flowers feels good in a sunny spot and also tolerates drier periods well. The ‘Emma’ hybrid hellebore is already showing its off-white flowers, which will decorate the early spring garden for a long time. The purple flowers and pleasant scent of lavender are familiar to many, while the bright, evergreen-leaved Gamander, which is excellent for creating garden spots, has a similar atmosphere with its purple flowers, with abundant flowering starting later.
For more than a century, the Folly Arboretum in Badacsonyörs has been collecting and caring for those plant species that will survive in the long term in the specific, sunny and increasingly dry climate of the Balaton Uplands. The development of the garden was not only a question of aesthetics, but also a continuous adaptation to weather conditions, so in recent years the drought-tolerant, Mediterranean-type plant population has been consciously strengthened.
