German retail sales decreased in April on a monthly and annual basis
German retail sales fell more than expected in April month-on-month, and the German Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, registered a decline on an annual basis as well, according to Friday’s report.
In April, based on preliminary data, retail turnover fell by 1.2 percent in real terms compared to the previous month, instead of the more modest 0.2 percent decrease expected. In March, there was a 2.6 percent monthly increase.
In real terms, retail turnover in April fell by 0.6 percent compared to a year earlier. In March, a larger annual decrease of 1.9 percent was measured.
