Champagne consumption in Germany on the decline
Champagne consumption in Germany has fallen significantly in the last ten years, with 17% less champagne consumed in 2023 than a decade earlier, according to the German Federal Statistical Office.
Germans aged 16 and over consumed a total of 267 million litres of champagne last year, equivalent to just five 0.75-litre bottles (or roughly 37 glasses) per person, compared with an average of 6.2 bottles (or 46 glasses) in 2013.
Despite the fall in champagne consumption, public revenues from this have remained stable. Last year, revenue from the champagne tax amounted to €361 million, or 0.04% of total tax revenue. The tax was originally introduced in the early 1900s to finance the imperial fleet, which has long ceased to exist, but this form of tax is still in place.
By comparison, the beer tax under the jurisdiction of the Länder generated €580 million in revenue for them in 2023.
