Declining prices on the meat and egg market: significant changes in July
According to the latest report of the Agricultural Economics Institute (AKI), at the end of July 2024, a significant price drop was experienced on the market for slaughter pigs and slaughter chickens, as well as for fresh meat and eggs.
Compared to the data of a year earlier, the price of slaughter pigs fell by almost 14 percent, so it decreased to approximately HUF 826 per kilogram. The producer price of broiler chicken decreased by 13 percent, to about HUF 420 per kilogram, while the price of turkey decreased by 12 percent, to HUF 582/kg.
The processing sales and retail purchase prices of raw pork have also decreased significantly, depending on the type of meat, the difference can exceed 10 percent. A similar trend can be observed in the case of fresh chicken and turkey, where prices also decreased on an annual basis.
In the case of eggs, the sales prices at the packing point fell even more, depending on the packaging and size, by up to 20 percent. The average price of caged eggs was around HUF 40-44 at the end of July.
