The water level of Lake Balaton is decreasing
During the summer heatwave, the temperature of Hungarian lakes and rivers provides ideal conditions for beachgoers. It was 27 degrees at Mosoni-Duna Győr on Thursday, while it was 26 degrees at Balaton Keszthely, and the temperature of Lake Velence was more than 28 degrees. These temperature data are perfectly suitable for more and more visitors to choose the beaches as a place of relaxation during the summer season. At the same time, the water level is constantly decreasing, which is a cause for serious concern.
According to the report prepared by RTL, the water level of Lake Velence was 130 cm on Thursday, which shows a significant increase of 34 centimeters compared to the same period last year. A similar positive change can be observed in the water level of Lake Balaton, which is 6 centimeters higher than at this time last year, currently 114 cm. Gabriella Siklós, the spokesperson of the National Directorate General of Water, called the current situation ideal.
Although the water levels are favorable, the water level of the lakes is constantly decreasing due to the heat. According to the data of the water affairs department, 7 cm evaporated from Lake Balaton in one month, while in the case of Lake Velence, this value amounted to roughly 10 centimeters. These data point to the effect of heat on water balance, which is an important aspect in the development of future water management plans.
This summer season therefore provides excellent conditions for those who want to relax by the water, who can enjoy the benefits of warm waters and favorable water levels. However, it is worth monitoring the consequences of heat and evaporation so that the water level of lakes and rivers remains sustainable in the long term.
