One of Germany’s oldest inns goes bankrupt
One of Germany’s oldest inns, the Schaumburger Hof in Bonn’s Plittersdorf district, has filed for bankruptcy and closed more than 270 years after its founding, according to a report in the Bild newspaper.
The bankruptcy was caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the rising minimum wage and high energy prices.
The inn’s history began on March 31, 1755. A winegrower at the time had the idea of building large stables next to his tavern on the banks of the Rhine. The idea proved successful and became increasingly popular, initially especially among the tugs who pulled the boats up the river with horses.
The inn was visited by many famous people, including the famous German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and the geographer, naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Heinrich Heine also stayed here, writing enthusiastically about the “terrace lined with lime trees.”
On September 5, 1948, the council that drafted the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany, which was adopted eight months later, met here.
After the federal government moved to Berlin, the North Rhine-Westphalian building was closed for several years until private investors reopened it in the 2000s.
