Prague Castle remains the most visited tourist destination in the Czech Republic
The most visited tourist destination in the Czech Republic is still Prague Castle, Hradčany. The seat of Czech kings and heads of state was visited by 2.57 million visitors last year, 17 percent more than in 2023, the state tourism agency CzechTourism announced in Prague on Wednesday.
The top ten most popular tourist destinations in the Czech Republic have not changed much in recent years. In second place is the cable car to Petrín Hill, also located in Prague, which rises on the left bank of the Vltava River, which was used by 1.51 million visitors last year, 21 percent fewer than in 2023. The decrease is due to the fact that the operation of the Prague counterpart of the Buda cogwheel was stopped last fall because it needs a complete renovation. The restart of traffic is planned for the fall of 2026.
Third place went to the Prague Zoo, whose attendance increased to 1.39 million from 1.36 million the previous year. In fourth place is the AquaPalace, a water park built in Cestlice near the Czech capital. Its attendance increased from 1.11 million in 2023 to 1.14 million last year.
The top five is rounded off by Dolní Vítkovice, which was built on the site of a former huge iron and steel factory in Ostrava, Moravia-Silesia. The factory’s typical industrial buildings from the old days have been preserved and an attractive cultural and entertainment center has been created, which is becoming increasingly popular. While 891 thousand people visited it in 2023, the number of visitors exceeded 931 thousand last year.
According to CzechTourism, castles and chateaux are the most popular among tourists, with 20 percent of tourists visiting them. Zoos came in second with 16 percent, followed by amusement parks with 15.6 percent. Technical and scientific monuments came in fourth with 10.5 percent, while classical museums and galleries attracted 10.1 percent of visitors. Nature-based attractions were chosen by 6 percent of people.
The 1,363 tourist destinations monitored by the agency attracted a combined 50.83 million visitors last year. In 2023, 1,369 destinations were monitored, with 51.73 million visitors.
