Fraudsters are misusing the names of Cyber Shield and a grocery store chain, and it is advisable for affected citizens to contact the police, the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) told MTI on Wednesday.

Fraudsters call in the name of the alleged “Cyber Shield Security Service” and indicate that they have detected suspicious money movements and unsuccessful transfer attempts on the customer’s bank accounts. They then give instructions to “place the money in the accounts in a safe place”, for example to transfer it to a “technical account”.

In reality, however, the fraudsters transfer the bank savings to their own account with the active participation of the affected customer.

They highlighted that the participants in the Cyber Shield cooperation, such as the MNB and commercial banks, are strengthening the financial consumer protection awareness of customers, including on the website www.kiberpajzs.hu.

However, they also indicated that they do not operate a telephone security service and do not contact customers directly.

Therefore, the MNB advises everyone that in the event of such calls – initiated in the name of the “Cyber Shield Security Service” – it is worth interrupting the conversation and reporting what happened to their bank or the MNB customer service.

The central bank also drew attention to the fact that other criminals, promising to transfer non-existent prizes from a grocery store chain, download spyware onto customers’ computers in order to learn their bank identifiers.

Prior to the fraud attempt, the customer concerned had registered for a prize draw of a well-known grocery store chain. Shortly after, he received an email message from an unknown company, followed by a phone call informing him that he had won.
