Only robot cash registers will soon be available at one of the domestic supermarket chains
The first units appeared last year, and by next year all Decathlon stores will have exclusively self-service cash registers – and all this thanks to a Hungarian IT company, Laurel. Despite the fears, the move does not involve layoffs, and the domestically developed cash registers can be found in Decathlons abroad since then.
Decathlon has embarked on a huge automation project: in all 24 of its stores in Hungary, they are replacing all their traditional cash registers with self-service cash registers (except for the information desks). In May of this year, Tatabánya became the first domestic Decathlon store with only self-service cash registers, 4 in number. Currently, the cash registers are being gradually replaced in their largest department store in Budaörs. There are now 10 self-service and five traditional checkouts, but by October there will be 18 self-services in the store, without traditional checkouts – Forbes.hu learned from Kulin Kitti, head of customer relations at Decathlon in Hungary.
