Coop Jednota Slovensko is Slovakia’s undisputed local hero in retail. While remaining rooted in small-surface, rural Potraviny shops the retailer is steadily moving into the modern supermarket format focused on technology and convenience. With pioneering 24/7 hybrid stores, Coop shows how tradition and innovation can stand side by side.

Coop Jednota Slovensko is Slovakia’s leading domestic retail cooperative and a flagship example of local hero retail in Central Europe. While the backbone of the network remains its many small rural proximity stores, the cooperative has also evolved to position itself with state-of-the-art urban supermarkets that place strong emphasis on convenience and technology, all while its marketing keeps the brand firmly rooted in authentic Slovak tradition.

Cooperative DNA – Authentic Slovak Retail

The roots of cooperative retail in Slovakia reach back 180 years, to the founding of the first cooperative in 1845. Out of this tradition grew today’s Coop Jednota Slovensko, uniting 30 independent regional consumer co-ops that together operate more than 1,900 stores across the country. This cooperative identity carries authenticity beyond a marketing claim and allows the organization’s DNA to shine through as part of daily retail life.

Coop Jednota works with more than 1,300 Slovak suppliers, from small farmers to family bakeries. According to the company, 73 percent of dairy, 87 percent of fresh meat, and almost 100 percent of chicken, milk, eggs, and bryndza are sourced domestically. This deep anchoring in Slovak production is reinforced by one of the country’s most enduring campaigns. For more than 15 years, Bača and Honelník – the shepherd and his helper – have been the symbolic faces of Coop Jednota, embedding the chain firmly in cultural memory. The strategy resonates: a PKS 2025 market survey found that Coop Jednota leads with 56 percent Slovak products on shelves, the highest share of any retailer. The next international players follow at a clear distance, with Biedronka at 44 percent and Tesco at 42 percent. Coop Jednota holds its ground as Slovakia’s retail local hero.

Tradition Evolving into Modernity

The majority of Coop Jednota’s stores are still small Potraviny outlets of less than 200 square meters, but the growth driver lies in larger, more modern supermarket formats. By the end of 2024, the chain operated 605 standard supermarkets and 101 larger Tempo Supermarkets. These modern formats feature digital shelf labels, eco-technologies, serviced counters, and in urban locations Coop Bistro food corners serving hot meals, soups, and grilled dishes. The assortment also reflects changing shopper expectations, with functional foods, free-from products, and an updated private label portfolio.

A further leap into modernity comes from Coop Jednota’s pioneering work with automated 24/7 hybrid stores. The first opened in 2024, and by mid-2025 the network had already grown to ten. In the Orava region alone, the local cooperative plans to expand the format to 20 stores, ensuring that in every community at least one outlet will remain open around the clock. These shops operate with staffed counters during the day and switch to automated mode at night, on Sundays, and on holidays. Access is via the Coop Jednota Klub app, with shopping fully cashless. No other retailer in Slovakia runs such a format, making Coop Jednota the pioneer of hybrid 24/7 stores. For this innovation, it was awarded the Innovator in Retail prize in 2024.

The store visits show that Coop Jednota manages a delicate balance: preserving its authentic role as Slovakia’s traditional local hero while at the same time responding to new shopper expectations with modern formats and technological solutions.
