EU mulls smoking ban in all work places
The European Commission is preparing a public consultation on a smoking ban in all work places, including bars and restaurants. The discussion is at very early stage and no legislative proposal is expected until the next commission, which takes office nex
European Union (EU) Social Affairs
Commissioner Vladimir Spidla would like to see a smoking ban in all
work places, for both health and safety reason. The scope of the
proposal is yet to be determined. But one of the areas the
commissioner wishes to see covered is restaurants, bars and pubs —
enclosed spaces where workers are exposed to passive smoking on daily
basis.
Currently, only a few EU member states
have imposed smoking bans in public places and the scope of the bans
vary from state to state.
