The government continues to pay special attention to maintaining the stability of the domestic dairy sector and ensuring the liquidity of farmers. In addition to the December package of measures, which primarily affects processors, producers who are in a difficult situation due to the low purchase price will also be helped with extraordinary means, so the government has also decided on another national support of 2.43 billion, announced Minister of Agriculture István Nagy in a statement sent to MTI on Tuesday.

The Minister highlighted that EU and domestic support sources will arrive at the affected farmers earlier than usual, but further effective steps are expected from the government following consultations with the sector’s players.

The final payment of the production-linked dairy cow support in these is taking place in the coming days, but in parallel, the Ministry of Agriculture has also created the conditions for an additional 2.43 billion forints in national support to be paid to producers

– he noted.

The support to be paid by the Hungarian State Treasury in the near future will affect approximately 2,300 farmers. It is also a direct response to the milk market crisis affecting the entire European Union, including Hungary, with particular regard to the prolonged low milk purchase prices, which are causing significant loss of income for the sector’s players – he added.

The aim of the exceptional support is to mitigate the adverse effects resulting from overproduction at the EU level and the Chinese response to the EU’s customs policy steps, to partially compensate for the deficit of milk producers, and to ensure the survival and operation of livestock farms until the market stabilizes.

At Hungary’s initiative, the serious situation of the milk market was also on the agenda of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council, following which the Commission is also closely monitoring the sectoral processes – announced.

István Nagy emphasized:

producers can count on the government, which is committed to supporting the strategically important dairy sector with all possible means, in addition to making maximum use of EU rules, within national competence, contributing to the security of domestic food supply, preserving rural jobs and strengthening the market positions of Hungarian dairy products, even in the European market environment that often changes drastically in a matter of seconds.

That is why the Ministry of Agriculture – based on consultations with the co-ministries – is also considering further interventions and initiating their introduction, the minister added. Minister of Agriculture.
