The CEO denies: the price of a Big Mac has not even doubled since 2019
Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s America, denied reports that the price of the Big Mac had doubled since 2019. According to a statement provided by Apnews, the price increase was actually only 20.5%, and Erlinger highlighted the company’s commitment to transparency and fair pricing.
Illustrating the scale of the increase, a Big Mac costs $4.39 in 2019 and currently costs $5.29. Franchise owners set prices, but McDonald’s tries to minimize price increases, the company said. A full Big Mac meal, which includes a sandwich, fries, and a drink, currently costs $9.29 in the U.S., which is a higher-than-average price, but some cases, like the $18 Big Mac, are considered exceptional.
The price increase affects not only the Big Mac, but also other products, such as French fries, the price of which has increased by 44% since 2019. Recent challenges include mixed quarterly results, a boycott in the Middle East and restrictions on consumer restaurant spending, which are putting further pressure on the hospitality industry globally.
