Budapest and Eger lead the list of Christmas destinations among domestic travelers
According to pre-booking data from Szallas.hu, Budapest and Eger remain the most popular domestic destinations for Christmas, similar to last year’s trends. Most people booked accommodation for two people and two nights, and 60% of bookings do not exceed 100,000 forints. A quarter of online payments were made with SZÉP cards, which remains a popular form of payment.
This year’s Christmas is unusual, as it offers a six-day long weekend to holidaymakers. Many people take advantage of this period to relax, which is clearly reflected in domestic booking trends. Budapest and Eger are at the top of the popularity list, but other popular locations have also registered a significant number of bookings:
- Budapest
- Eger
- Hajdúszoboszló
- Gyula
- Szeged
- Hévíz and Siófok
- Miskolc
- Pécs
- Zalakaros
- Debrecen
According to the booking data, the Northern Great Plain region is particularly popular, accounting for nearly 25% of domestic bookings. Lake Balaton is in second place with a 15% share, while the Southern Great Plain region came in third with 13.6%.
Wellness hotels stock up for Christmas
The majority of bookings are for two people, and most people spend two nights at their destination. Seasonality has noticeably shifted demand towards hotels: while in summer 25% of bookings were for hotels, this proportion increased to 44% at Christmas.
Four-star wellness hotels are particularly popular, offering special holiday services and maximum comfort. In addition, 25% of bookings are for apartments, 16% for guesthouses, and 11% for bed and breakfasts.
