Can Hungarian customers say goodbye to their favorite chips flavors? Several domestic store chains made the announcement
Many product manufacturers have been forced to change their food ingredients since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Due to the shortage and rising prices of raw materials, it seemed inevitable already in the spring that some ingredients – such as sunflower oil – would be replaced. At the time, however, it was not yet known which products would be affected. So far, according to the information on the website of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih), 5 companies have made notifications, affecting a total of 95 products. In these, sunflower oil can be replaced with lard, rapeseed oil, palm oil or soybean oil.
Already in April, they started communicating abroad that the composition of some snacks would change due to the seemingly permanent shortage of sunflower oil as a result of the war. Even before Easter, during a round table discussion, our newspaper asked the president of the Association of Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers, Sándor Sánta, what Hungarian customers can expect. At the time, the specialist said that negotiations are already underway in Hungary about the replacement of certain raw materials, such as sunflower oil. A change in the recipes is expected, but this change will not happen overnight, as the quality must be maintained the same – Pénzcentrum learned.
The first swallow was one of the leading domestic canned food producers, Szegedi Paprika Zrt., which announced the change of raw materials at the end of May. At that time, Aro, Baroni, CBA Piros, Hazánk Kincsei, Házias Ízek, Menü, PENNY, Privát, Reál, Spar brands were added to the list, which was later expanded to include Coop products. Soon after canned food, other categories of food were added to the list: e.g. Metro Chef quick-frozen, breaded, pre-fried squid rings. METRO then announced:
The raw material supply problems caused by the current Ukrainian-Russian war situation make it necessary to replace the sunflower oil with rapeseed oil in the case of the Metro Chef quick-frozen, breaded squid rings products distributed by METRO Kereskedelmi Kft. The change in ingredients also affects the Metro Chef brand Pesto Alla Genovese, breaded mozzarella sticks, chili cheese nuggets, and cheddar cheese jalapenos.
