Volkswagen expanded in Hungary in 2025
Volkswagen brand sales increased by 6.8 percent in 2025 on the Hungarian new car market, slightly exceeding the 6.5 percent growth of the entire passenger car market. The brand sees opportunities for growth this year in addressing private customers – explained Zoltán Papp, brand director of Porsche Hungaria, which imports Volkswagen Group brands.
129,440 vehicles were sold on the Hungarian new car market in 2025. Volkswagen’s share at the end of the year was 6.7 percent, making it 4th in the ranking of brands.
Evaluating the Hungarian market, Zoltán Papp explained: the share of SUV models reaches 60 percent, which is an outstanding value in Europe, even though the predominance of the category is an international phenomenon. VW’s model range is strong in the SUV segment, as 8 of the 18 models offered are SUVs; the brand’s most successful model in Hungary is the T-Roc, he added. He reminded that there is a continuous decline in the station wagon segment, which was previously strong in corporate purchases.
The brand director mentioned as a success that Volkswagen is the most attractive brand among private buyers in Hungary, so they will focus on private buyers in the coming period. He noted that as part of this, a Polo model was put together at the end of the year, which could appear at dealers as the lowest-priced Hungarian car.
The proportion of private buyers in the Hungarian new car market reaches 32 percent. The ratio in VW sales is 23.3 percent, according to the brand director.
Zoltán Papp indicated that this year the brand will appear in the 0 (small cars) segment, in which it has not been present so far, and will expand its electric offering with new models, among other things. VW sold 495 electric passenger cars in Hungary in 2025, 48 percent more than in 2024. Its market share has increased to 4.5 percent in the electric segment, but it aims to catch up with its other powered models.
Porsche Hungaria Kft., the exclusive Hungarian importer of Audi, CUPRA, SEAT, Skoda, Volkswagen and VW commercial vehicles, recently reported that 29,500 of its models were sold in Hungary in 2025, maintaining its leading position among Hungarian importers with a 5 percent increase compared to 2024. According to preliminary data previously published by the company, sales in 2025 will increase to 647 billion forints.
