Hand luggage is expanding: Ryanair responded to the EU proposal

Ryanair passengers will soon be able to travel with a larger bag – the budget airline is increasing the size of hand luggage allowed on board by twenty percent. The decision was made at the initiative of the European Union and will come into effect in the coming weeks.

Ryanair has announced a small but noticeable change for many: instead of the previously permitted hand luggage of 40×25×20 centimeters, passengers will soon be able to take a package measuring 40×30×20 centimeters on board. Although there will be no change in the number of separately allowed free luggage, the size change increases the total volume of the package from 20 liters to 24 liters, so a few extra items of clothing or accessories can easily fit in.

The move was preceded by a proposal from the European Union that calls for more uniform and passenger-friendly hand luggage regulations among airlines operating in the member states. With this decision, Ryanair is responding not only to passenger demands but also to EU guidelines.

Although the new regulations have not yet come into force, Ryanair says they will start the transition in the coming weeks. The change brings the company in line with its direct competitors: Wizz Air has previously allowed a similar size, and easyJet continues to allow larger luggage on board, so Ryanair is trying to offer a more competitive offer with this step.

The size of hand luggage has long been a critical point for passengers, especially in the case of budget airlines, where ticket prices are low but extra services are often charged at high surcharges. An increase of a few centimeters can therefore not only be an advantage in terms of comfort, but also help avoid hidden costs – for example, passengers having to check in an inappropriately sized bag.

Ryanair’s decision fits well with the industry trend that focuses on improving the user experience and easing regulatory pressure. And for travelers, this is a clear win: more space, less stress – for the same price.
