BGYH: the renovation of the Gellért Baths will begin in October
The complete renovation of the Gellért Bath will begin in October, with the planned cost of the investment being 20 billion forints, announced the Budapest Spa and Thermal Waters Co. (BGYH) Ltd.
According to their information, the spa, which opened in 1918, last underwent a complete renovation in the 1970s. After fifty years, due to the deteriorated basic infrastructure and the static problems that have arisen, comprehensive reconstruction, architectural, mechanical and technological modernization are inevitable.
Gellért is the company’s second most significant bath, and its renovation is one of the largest spa developments nationwide, they announced.
The cleaning of thermal water, steam, pools and spaces in accordance with the regulations is a heavy burden on the equipment, tools, all kinds of coverings and metal objects or surfaces, but even the structure of the building.
According to the BGYH, the preparation for the renovation that is now starting began in 2023. Meanwhile, the reconstruction of the Gellért Hotel is also ongoing.
The board of directors of BGYH Zrt. decided on the concept plan for the renovation in June 2024, the licensed plans were completed by November, and the official licensing process could begin.
In February of this year, the Budapest Metropolitan Municipality Assembly accepted the feasibility study for the reconstruction and approved the preparation of the construction plans, the public procurement procedure for which is in progress – they announced.
