A design student from the University of Sopron won the Pénzverő award
At the opening of the 25th National Medal Biennial, Laura Paulics, a BA student in design at the Faculty of Wood Engineering and Creative Industries of the University of Sopron, received the Lajos Berán Award of the Hungarian Mint on September 7, 2025, in Sopron. The award is given to the best young designer of a minted medal.
Laura Paulics’ award-winning work, “TutCa – The Mystery of the Pharaoh”, a paper-based, print-based commemorative coin measuring 295 × 210 mm, presents a visual narrative on a historical theme. Her creativity and unusual design language give new impetus to the world of precious metals. Her innovative approach and visual experimentation promise a promising start to her career.
Within the framework of the National Medal Biennial to be held in Sopron, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Biennial, the owner of the Hungarian Mint, with the consent of the Hungarian National Bank, established an award called the Berán Lajos Award, with the aim of nurturing the Hungarian traditions of minted medals, primarily to involve the young generation of designers in the minted medal design process.
Applicants could apply for the award by submitting original (not yet realized in minted medals) front and back designs (collectively called a competition work or competition work) suitable for the production of a proof-style minted medal (in the year of the respective National Medal Biennial). The award founder did not set any restrictions on the subject matter of the competition works. Applications were open to those aged 18 to 45.
The condition for a valid application was the submission of at least one front and back graphic design, but more than one entry was also possible. At the applicant’s own discretion, in addition to the graphic designs, they could also prepare and submit plaster models of the relevant designs.
The work of the winner of the Lajos Berán Prize will be presented at the National Coin Biennial. The artist’s design will be implemented by the Hungarian Mint, which will provide the artist with 10 copies. The award also includes the opportunity for the creator of the winning graphic design to participate once, in a given theme, as a non-exclusive invitee, in the application system of the Hungarian National Bank’s commemorative coin issuance program for the following year.
The XXV. National Coin Biennial can be visited in Sopron, in the Lábasház (Orsolya tér 5.) until October 19, 2025.
