Kaufland introduces deposit-return wine bottles
In a move towards greater sustainability, Kaufland has introduced 0.75-liter reusable wine bottles with a €0.25 deposit in around 200 stores across southern Germany.
The initiative aims to reduce environmental impact, as bottle production accounts for 47% of a bottle of wine’s total CO₂ emissions.
The new bottles have been developed by the cooperative Wein-Mehrweg eG, which includes 14 wineries representing over 5% of Germany’s wine production. Kaufland now offers regional red, rosé, and white wines in these bottles, available mainly in Baden-Württemberg and parts of Bavaria.
Unlike single-use bottles, these reusable versions are returned, cleaned, and refilled. Accompanying the bottles are crates made from recycled materials, carrying a €3.50 deposit, and accepted nationwide at all Kaufland return machines. The bottles are marked with a special imprint on the neck and a reusable symbol on the label, making them easily recognizable.
