Purchasing partnerships control 95 per cent of the Italian market
According to Paul Griffin from the London-based market researchers IGD, the Italian food retail market was worth EUR 149,5 in 2005. The five biggest chains hold a combined market share of 23 per cent. Hyper markets still have a lot of potential for growth. The six largest purchasing partnerships control 95 per cent of the market. Six out of the seven largest retail chains are members in such a partnership.
