My new position demanded that I spend weeks in Romania and Bulgaria as well. I had mixed feelings about this, not having an idea of what to expect. Investment and development projects are spectacularly visible. New plants, logistic bases and stores are swarming everywhere. Investment is pouring in. The first great surprise for me came in a small village in the Bánát region, where I found the best guest house since Budapest, with cheap rates and unbelievably nice service at 01,00 AM. The Romanian owner spoke excellent English. I suddenly realised that we, Hungarians still think far too much of ourselves, complacently looking down on our neighbours and not doing much.. If we carry on like this, we’ll be left behind.
