The National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) first confirmed the presence of the pathogen causing grape golden yellow disease in Békés County in laboratory samples taken in Újkígyós and then in Mezőberény. This now affects 13 counties. The disease can still only be protected against with preventive measures, so it is of utmost importance that farmers regularly check their plantations and immediately notify the authorities in case of suspicion.

The official sampling was necessary due to the suspicion of the presence of Grapevine flavescence dorée (FD) phytoplasma as a quarantine pest in Újkígyós and Mezőberény. During the examination of grape leaf samples showing symptoms, the Nébih laboratory confirmed the presence of the quarantine pathogen. Due to the confirmed infection, the plant protection experts of the regionally competent county government office immediately began quarantine measures in order to eradicate the infection caused by the pest and prevent its settlement and further spread.

The spread of the grapevine cicada must be stopped

The authority once again draws the attention of grape growers that control against FD can only be achieved with preventive measures, including the purchase of healthy propagation material and control against its vector, the American grapevine cicada. The pest monitoring system of Nébih helps in the appropriate timing of control. The spread of the American grapevine cicada can be tracked using the interactive map.
