The family is together, the presents are under the tree, everyone is ready to celebrate. Christmas brings coziness, but if we are not careful, the holidays can also be filled with annoyance. The end-of-year holiday season is one of the most productive seasons for online and cybercriminals. Online purchases and traffic increase before the holidays, but attention wanes, as we try to get our gifts as soon as possible. In recent years, online orders have been increasing, and scammers are certainly taking advantage of this. The KPMG team has brought you some simple holiday tips, which if we actually follow – unlike our New Year’s resolutions – we can easily identify who and how they want to spoil the most beautiful time of the year. Cybercrime is spreading more and more every year, with the “industry’s turnover” increasing by 10% from 2023 to 2024, and no decrease is expected in the coming years. From the perspective of fraudsters, there is a time of year that is particularly favorable for committing online fraud: during the period starting with Black Friday and ending with the New Year, online purchases increase significantly, while customers’ attention decreases.

Report and block immediately!

One of the most common forms of online fraud is when criminals try to steal data from us through our banking service provider and bank account. It is worth reporting suspicious charges and unknown transfers immediately, first to the bank, and in the case of larger amounts, to the police, because the sooner we act, the greater the chance that the damage will be limited.

If we detect a problem, don’t panic! First, there are solutions that we can take quickly and free of charge. One such option is to set the card limit to 0 — it is fast, free and reversible. If the suspicion is not related to the card but to a transfer, then log in to your eBank immediately and change your password. Don’t be lazy to use a card for online purchases, on which you only put the amount you need for the given purchase. This way, you can prevent potential attacks in advance.

Do not open the link!

A stray SMS, a familiar-looking e-mail and a click. That’s enough for malicious people to obtain your valuable data. Not only is fraud protection becoming more sophisticated, but the criminals and software that carry out fraud are also constantly evolving. Never open a link that you are not completely sure of. One of the easiest ways to do this is to look for the “https” symbol in the URL. This means that the communication on the website is encrypted and protected from prying eyes.

Unfortunately, fraudulent emails and SMS messages can look very similar to the original ones. Be suspicious if they want to deliver a package that you never ordered. If you receive such a request for payment, it is definitely worth calling the call center of the service provider. Let’s find out who wants our money and why!

Pay attention to the signs!

In the AI era, scammers can already create messages with perfect grammar, so other signs are more telling: general address instead of personal, urgency, promise of a prize, unusual, strange email address, company name in the link with a character error. If you experience such things, do not respond to it, do not click on the link!

We can easily put others in danger!

During the holidays, there are more opportunities for home office. In such cases, our company devices are taken home, and we often use them to conduct business that is prohibited by company regulations anyway.

Make sure that we only use our company devices for their intended purpose, as they may contain not only our data, but also sensitive company information, login codes and passwords, which can become prey for fraudsters with a well-executed attack. Do not register with your company email for private services or webshops!

Check the webshops!

During the holiday season – when everything is suddenly “on sale”, “last minute”, and “now or never” – it is especially easy to run into fake webshops. These fraudulent sites are often deceptively professional, beautiful, fast, and even copy the image of brands. The most important defensive step is therefore to buy
