The eradication of farms infected with FMD has been completed
The culling and disposal of infected herds in Darnózseli and Dunakiliti, the farms affected by the third and fourth outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), has been completed. However, official work, including the disinfection of the farms, is still ongoing. The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) has not yet confirmed any new cases, but attention cannot be slackened, as the average incubation period of the virus in cattle is 14 days. Therefore, it is extremely important that livestock keepers and animal care workers consistently comply with disease control regulations in their own well-understood interests.

In Darnózseli and Dunakiliti, located in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Nébih confirmed FMD disease at the beginning of April. The cattle were vaccinated on the farms that same day to minimize virus shedding until they are eliminated. The elimination of the herds has now been completed. 3,588 animals, a total of about 8,300, have been destroyed on the two farms since the beginning of March.
Testing of susceptible animals is ongoing nationwide
So far, the Nébih laboratory has tested samples from more than 1,200 livestock farms and 700 wild animals, and the experts have not confirmed any new infections. Despite the favorable results, the most important thing now is not to let up on the attention and to work together to prevent the virus from reappearing. Disinfection is underway on the infected farms. National sampling is also continuing and official measures are in place.
It is of utmost importance that livestock keepers strictly and consistently comply with all regulations and animal health rules, so as not to accidentally bring the infection into their farms.
In order to help with the protection, Nébih is delivering more than 1,250 10-liter disinfectants to settlements in restricted areas this week, and is distributing almost 100,000 information leaflets to local residents with the help of government offices. Our authority is also conducting on-site inspections of livestock farms nationwide and checking compliance with regulations. Nébih, government and district office specialists are fighting with all their might to curb the RSZKF disease. The goal is clear: to stop the virus and minimize the damage!
