Carrefour has opened its first airport convenience store in Spain, a Carrefour City outlet located in Terminal 2 of Barcelona-El Prat Airport.

Carrefour noted that the new outlet is specifically tailored to the fast-paced airport environment, offering a quick and efficient shopping experience. It offers more than 1,000 SKUs, including fresh ready-to-eat foods, cold drinks, snacks, nuts, milk, coffee, fruit, and essential pantry staples, ESM Magazine reports.

Reinforcing its local connection, the store also features a variety of Catalan products, alongside travel accessories and personal-care items.

New Customer Profiles

Jesús Bermejo, director of convenience and franchise stores at Carrefour Spain, said that the new-store opening underscores Carrefour’s dedication to adapting its model to new customer profiles.

“Our multi-format and omnichannel strategy allows Carrefour to meet diverse customer needs across different environments, from urban centres to rural areas, including unique and high-traffic locations,” Bermejo said.

This airport debut is a key component of Carrefour Spain’s growth strategy, with the retailer aiming to open more than 100 new stores this year, bringing its total to 1,600 locations by the end of 2025. This expansion is projected to create nearly 700 new full-time jobs.

Since 2019, Carrefour has invested over €150 million in Spain, resulting in the creation of 691 new stores and 3,500 jobs, both company owned and franchised.

Format Diversification

As part of its growth strategy, Carrefour is proactively diversifying its formats to capture new market share. This includes establishing a presence in a wide array of locations, such as petrol stations, train stations, service areas, campsites, and iconic spots within the Madrid metropolitan area, including Puerta del Sol, Plaza Elíptica, and Plaza de Castilla.

The success of Carrefour’s airport store model at Barcelona-El Prat could pave the way for similar openings in other high-traffic Spanish airports, it noted.
