Barcelona remains a popular destination, but over-tourism is causing concern among locals
Despite the fact that economic difficulties and fluctuating exchange rates are a challenge in almost every country, the desire to travel has remained unbroken. Within Europe, Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations that attracts tourists like a magnet. At the same time, local residents are increasingly protesting over-tourism.
Despite the economic difficulties, tourism will flourish in 2024. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that nine of the ten most profitable days of the past year were this year. European consumers are increasingly spending on lasting experiences instead of material goods. According to the SpendingPulse Destinations report, experiences already account for 12% of travel spending. For example, English tourists spend 16% of their money on nightlife, which is much higher than the global average (10%), the Money Center points out in a recent article.
