The historic success of Balaton red wine at the world’s largest wine competition
The Zelna Borászat in Balatonfüred achieved a historic success at the Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s largest and most respected wine competition: their red wine Peregrina won a gold medal with 95 points. A red wine from the Balaton region has never achieved such high recognition at this competition – this is the first gold medal for a Balaton red wine in the history of the DWWA.
The Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) this year It was held for the 22nd time and has now grown into the most influential competition in the wine world, where the winning entries are judged by the world’s leading experts in rigorous blind tastings.
The Peregrina is a 75% Merlot and 25% Syrah blend, born from the last harvests of the excellent 2021 vintage. The blending of the separately fermented and barrel-aged lots resulted in a deep, complex and elegant wine. The oriental spicy character of Syrah (allspice, cloves) perfectly complements the velvety softness of Merlot. The wine was aged for more than a year in American, French and Hungarian barrels and is released in limited editions, individually numbered, and BIO certified.
“The birth of Peregrina is the result of a long learning and careful, yet precise process.”
said Barna Barabás, Zelna’s chief winemaker.
The winery’s other achievements at the 2025 Decanter competition also confirm its ambitions:
- Zelna Peregrina – 95 points, GOLD MEDAL
- Zelna Füred Olaszrizling – 91 points, SILVER MEDAL
- Zelna Penke Pinot Gris – 89 points, BRONZE MEDAL
- Zelna Bárka Vörös Cuvée – 88 points, BRONZE MEDAL
