Balaton Tourism Association: it’s time to take the importance of swimming seriously!
It is time to take the importance of swimming seriously – the Balaton Tourism Association warned on Saturday about the Balaton swim.
In a statement sent to MTI, they highlighted that swimming skills are essential for safe bathing.
Based on data from the Hungarian Lifeguard Service, they wrote that according to statistics, more than 560 people have lost their lives in the natural waters of our country in the past five years, with more than 60 of the tragedies occurring in Lake Balaton. Most of these could have been avoided if those involved had been able to swim properly or had been aware of the dangers of open water bathing – they quoted Tamás Fekete, the president of the association.
The head of the organization pointed out that summer is a time for beach holidays and relaxing by the water, yet there are many children and adults who cannot swim or can only swim very uncertainly.
According to statistics, those who cannot swim are at much greater risk, especially in open water, where unexpected currents, suddenly deepening water and fatigue can also pose serious risks
– he added.
Tamás Fekete said that a lot of swimming lessons have started around Lake Balaton this summer, especially for children. These courses not only provide a foundation for safety, but also contribute to a healthy lifestyle and even the development of a love for sports – he noted.
