BalatonBike365: record traffic in Lake Balaton cycling tourism
Hungary’s largest and most complex cycling tourism project, BalatonBike365 (BB365), has been running for three years, and the numbers continue to show steady growth. According to Péter Princzinger, CEO of VisitBalaton365, 2025 is seeing expansion on all fronts – reports Turizmus.com.
According to data from the automatic traffic counters, more than 143,000 cyclists were registered in Balatonszárszó between January and August, representing a 5 percent increase compared to the previous year and pointing towards an annual total of 170,000. At the Örvényes measuring point, 114,000 cyclists were counted, a 13 percent increase compared to 2023. Even in areas further from the shore, traffic is rising dynamically: in Gyenesdiás, for example, cyclist numbers grew by 18 percent.
Cyclist presence also strengthened on BAHART ferries and passenger boats: during the summer months, bicycle traffic rose by 14 percent on ferries and by 23 percent on passenger boats compared to last year.
Bicycle rentals have increased significantly: in the first eight months of 2025, 16,500 guests rented bikes, 25 percent more than a year earlier, and 81 percent more than in 2023. The main driver of growth is the e-bike, chosen by 70 percent of renters during the summer months. The originally 530-strong fleet has now expanded to 1,000 bicycles, with an additional 100 expected by the end of the year.
The figures clearly show that BB365 not only boosts traffic on the Balaton Cycle Path but also brings hidden inland routes and water transport into the lifeblood of cycling tourism around Lake Balaton.
