In trouble, logistics and water transport are also facing challenges
There are basically three things needed to transport goods by river: an operational ship, suitable goods and sufficient water. However, there are serious problems in virtually all of these areas – VG explains in a recent article.
Domestic water transport is in a difficult situation. According to original estimates, the amount of goods to be transported by water in Hungary would have been around 8 million tons this year, as in previous years, if agriculture had not been hit by a severe drought.
Attila Bencsik, president of the Association of Hungarian Inland Transporters, summarized the situation of the sector for VG.
At first, the agricultural traders withheld the export fund, and then the agricultural ministry also restricted the circulation centrally by making the export of grain subject to a license in order to ensure the security of domestic supply.
However, since 2020, the volume of transport has also decreased in the case of several other types of goods, after the production of several industries that rely on water transport has fallen, such as metallurgy, the chemical industry, the production of fertilizers or precisely the large and bulky equipment and project loads that can usually only be transported by water, he explained.
