After the busy spring break, the May long weekend also exceeded all expectations in terms of boating on Lake Balaton. Between May 1 and 4, the ferries and passenger ships of the Balaton Shipping Company (BAHART) transported 69,000 passengers – the Hungarian Tourist Agency informed MTI in a statement on Thursday.

They explain that, thanks to the summery weather, bicycle tickets were also very popular. Over the four days, about 11,000 people combined a bicycle and boat trip.

The expanded timetable and the increased interest in the two new ferries and two new catamarans put into service last year with the government’s support of more than six billion forints also contributed to the record traffic at the beginning of May – they noted.

The statement adds that the traffic on May 1 was particularly outstanding on the Fonyód-Badacsony route. After 7 thousand passengers last year, more than 9 thousand people have traveled between the two settlements this year, where three large ships were operating.

The traffic of this year’s Balaton passenger shipping, which started on March 28, has produced strong numbers overall – they wrote. Passenger traffic exceeded the results of the same period last year by 8 percent. Demand has increased in particular for scheduled boat services, which now depart from 13 ports.

A novelty this time is that from May the Balatonboglár-Révfülöp route will also call at Balatonlellé – the announcement mentions. On this route, passengers can meet one of the shipping company’s new catamarans, the Tomaj, on weekends, which, together with the other catamaran, represents a new level of comfort and modernity in Balaton passenger shipping.

Regarding the ferry traffic between Szántód and Tihany, it is written that more and more motorists are choosing this option to travel between the northern and southern settlements of Lake Balaton: so far this year, approximately 97 thousand vehicles, 22 thousand bicycles, and 250 thousand passengers have crossed the lake by ferry.
