The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) has confirmed the presence of a highly pathogenic bird flu virus in a roast duck farm in the Lakitelek settlement in Bács-Kiskun County. The affected herd is currently being eradicated. Preventing the onset and further spread of the disease is of key importance for the entire poultry sector. Nébih calls for full compliance with epidemiological regulations, as the risk of infection from wild birds has also increased due to the easing weather.

The disease was confirmed by the Nébih laboratory in a roast duck herd of 13,500 individuals in Lakitelek, Bács-Kiskun County. The presence of the disease was drawn to attention by the drastic decrease in feed consumption. In addition, the activity of the animals decreased, nervous system symptoms appeared, and the mortality rate increased. The samples showed the highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1. The authority designated a 3 km radius protection zone around the farm and an expanded surveillance zone.

The eradication of the flock and the epidemiological investigation are currently underway

As the weather eased after the hard frosts, wild birds dispersed and pose a great risk to our poultry flocks across the country. That is why it is most important to minimize the possibility of direct and indirect contact between poultry and wild birds, which can be achieved by strictly and consistently adhering to the disease control regulations.
