Bird flu has appeared in a new area of Bács-Kiskun County
The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) confirmed the presence of a highly pathogenic bird flu virus in an area of Bács-Kiskun county that had not been affected before. The liquidation of the affected stock is in progress.
In the laying hen colony of nearly 30,000 in Bácsszentgyörgy, Bács-Kiskun County, the keeper suspected bird flu because of the animals’ lethargy and lack of appetite, as well as the increased mortality. The Nébih laboratory detected the H5N1 subtype of the virus in the dead animals. The stocks in question are being liquidated. The authority designated a protection zone with a radius of 3 km around the given farms and defined a surveillance (observation) zone with a radius of 10 km. An epidemiologic investigation into the causes of the appearance of the disease has also begun.
In order to end the epidemic as soon as possible, it is still of utmost importance to fully comply with the epidemic prevention regulations
Since the virus is present not only in migratory but also in domestic wild birds, protection against them is extremely important not only during the migration period, but throughout the year. Among other things, feed and litter must be stored under cover, and everything must be done to minimize the risk of direct or indirect contact between poultry and game birds. In addition, special attention must be paid to keeping passenger and vehicle traffic on the farms to a minimum level, and to ensure that they only take place in strict compliance with epidemic prevention regulations.
