The import of small ruminants also had to be limited due to the disease accompanied by fever, runny eyes and nose. The ppr epidemic broke out in Greece in the first half of July, and sheep and goats cannot be transported from there to any member state of the EU. Within days, the disease appeared in Romania as well, and it was detected in Temes County, which is close to Hungary, so small ruminants from neighboring countries cannot enter the country either. Based on the order of the national chief veterinarian, shipments of sheep and goats that arrived in Romania this year must also be inspected, and transit shipments are subject to increased inspection. The authorities’ attention also extends to illegal animal shipments, as well as exports to Romania and Greece. PPR is not dangerous for humans, but it is considered one of the most contagious diseases of small ruminants. Its appearance causes serious economic damage, which is why it is very important to prevent its introduction, the announcement reads.
