The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has published a compilation of the rules on goods that can be transported in luggage on its website.

In a statement sent to MTI on Thursday, they wrote: if someone is traveling between European Union member states, there are generally no restrictions on the export and import of products purchased for personal use or as gifts. However, there are certain goods – endangered wild animal and plant species, medicines, self-defense, sports and hunting weapons, alcohol and tobacco products, and the travel of pets – that are subject to restrictions and permits.

Within the EU, private individuals do not need a permit for the non-commercial transport of excise goods – such as alcohol, cigarettes, fuel. The quantitative limit is, for example, 800 cigarettes, 200 cigars, 110 liters of beer or 90 liters of wine or champagne.

In terms of import regulations, it does not matter what we are traveling to Hungary from outside the EU. For example, if you are over the age of seventeen, you can bring 200 cigarettes by air, 40 cigarettes by other means, 16 liters of beer, and 4 liters of wine, duty and tax free. With the exception of alcohol and tobacco products, various goods can be imported duty and tax free up to a value of 430 euros by air, 300 euros by road and rail, but the value limit for passengers under 15 years of age is 150 euros.

In the case of a destination outside the EU, the laws of the destination country must also be observed when exporting, and Hungarian diplomatic missions provide information about these.

The National Tax and Customs Administration also draws attention to cash. Anyone crossing the external borders of the European Union and carrying money worth 10,000 euros or more is required to declare this in writing to the customs authority where they enter or leave the EU.

In addition to securities, bonds, shares, and traveler’s checks, coins with a gold content of at least 90 percent and gold bars, nuggets, and grains with a gold content of at least 99.5 percent are also included in the value.

It was emphasized that the unauthorized import of products made from endangered species – such as starfish and fur – is illegal. An environmental fine and up to three years in prison can also be imposed for the unauthorized import of ivory, tortoiseshell, or exotic leather products.

Those receiving continuous medication should ask for a certificate from their doctor, because they can only take the amount of medication prescribed by the doctor with them on their trips to member states.

Within the EU, pets can only be taken abroad with a pet passport issued by a veterinarian.

They also mentioned that plants and plant products in passengers’ luggage may not be brought into the territory of the European Union, or may only be brought into the territory of the European Union accompanied by a common entry document (KEBO) finalized by the plant health border post of the county government office.

The exceptions to this are pineapples, bananas, dates, durians and coconuts, which may be brought in without quantitative restrictions. In the absence of a KEBO, plants and plant products that cannot be consumed, such as seeds, live plants, wreaths, may not be brought in at all. Fruits and plant parts contaminated with sticky soil may also not be brought in.
