The MNB’s summer campaign also warns against travel cyber fraud
The new consumer protection campaign of the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) supports the reduction of financial risks during the holiday.
The central bank indicated in its statement on Thursday that, according to customer complaints, cyber fraud attempts involving accommodation providers, car rental companies and other partners are continuing.
In some cases, consumers receive another notification from their host on the official messaging interface of well-known accommodation search portals. According to the urgent messages, threatening to cancel the reservation, the reservation must be confirmed again by entering their confidential card identifiers or two-factor customer authentication codes. The identifiers are then used to withdraw money from the customer’s account.
Customers may be deceived by the fact that criminals often do not appear to ask for more money, and the notification comes from the interface of the usual accommodation search companies. The reason for this may be that cyber fraudsters previously accessed the computers of the given accommodation providers, from where they can learn the details of the guests’ specific accommodation reservations – explained the MNB.
To combat cyber fraud, it is worth limiting the purchase and cash withdrawal limits of bank cards, or paying for accommodation reservations with a single-use virtual card. It is advisable to use the SMS or pop-up window banking notification service that immediately reports card transactions, and to immediately block the card if suspicious transactions are detected
