Hungary is at the bottom of the EU rankings in terms of financial satisfaction
According to Eurostat data for 2022, Hungary remains in the bottom third of the European Union in terms of financial satisfaction. Hungarians rated their financial situation on average 5.9 points on a scale of 0-10, compared to the EU average of 6.6 points.
Who are the most satisfied and who are the most dissatisfied?
The Netherlands and Finland topped the EU list, where the population rated their financial situation on average 7.6 points. They were followed by Sweden (7.4) and Austria (7.3).
The most dissatisfied were Bulgaria (4.6), Greece (5.3), Croatia (5.7), Slovakia (5.8), and Hungary and Latvia (5.9). The latter two countries closed the list with the same score.
Hungary: little progress, high inflation background
Although the Hungarian result lags behind the EU average, the situation shows some improvement: in 2018, Eurostat measured 5.5 points, meaning that Hungarians are slightly more optimistic about their finances than four years earlier. This is especially noteworthy in light of inflation of over 25% in 2022, which has severely worsened real incomes.
Movements in the ranking
The positions of several countries have changed in recent years: Portugal and Lithuania have overtaken Hungary, while Latvia, which started from a lower level, has caught up with our country. The EU average has meanwhile increased from 6.5 to 6.6 points.
However, the assessment has not improved everywhere: residents of Denmark, Ireland, France, Luxembourg, Slovakia and Sweden have proven to be slightly more dissatisfied with their finances in 2022 than before.
