The EU's agricultural support is a threat to global food security
The European Union's agricultural support makes the agricultural development of the third world very difficult – warns EurActiv EU news portal.
On the G8 meeting in Italy the G8 countries promised a 14 billion USD aid for agricultural development, to the world's poorest countries. The European Union's agricultural support system however, makes the noble goals very difficult. It is feared that the African farmers might never be as competitive as the farmers of the major European countries due to the agricultural state subsidies. The poor countries can only increase their agriculture if the EU will not support its own farmers. There is just a little hope for this, due to the protests of european farmers and the opposition of French and German politicians, despite the fact that the European Commission has previously called for the abolition of agricultural subsidies from 2013 – reports globusz.net.
