The price of lamb increased in the EU and in Hungary

According to data from the European Commission, the European Union’s sheep and goat imports (live animals and meat) were 118.8 thousand tonnes in January-July 2025, an increase of 20 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest suppliers were New Zealand and the United Kingdom, with a combined share of 92 percent. The volume of sheep and goat meat and live animals sold on the international market (61.2 thousand tonnes) increased by 5 percent compared to January-July 2024. The largest target markets were Algeria (32 percent share), Jordan (16.8 percent) and the United Kingdom (10.5 percent).

In the European Union, the price of light lamb was 11.2 percent higher in January-October 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. The price of heavy lamb increased by 15.6 percent. According to the slaughter statistics of the AKI, the number of sheep slaughtered in January-September 2025 decreased by 24.4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. According to the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the volume of Hungary’s live lamb exports decreased by 7.9 percent (10.3 thousand tons), while their value increased by 1.7 percent (to 21.6 billion forints) in January-September 2025 compared to a year earlier. According to the AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of light and heavy lamb in Hungary increased in January-October 2025 compared to the average price in the same months of 2024: the average price of light lamb was 2036 forints/kilogram (+8 percent), and that of heavy lamb was 1891 forints/kilogram (+6 percent).
